Never being one to make life easy, Microsoft have released some fairly ambiguous information to Windows 8.1 App developers. From the information I have had access to, I have put together this brief guide to the Windows 8.1 App launcher & Tile Icon Sizes.
Windows 8.1 App Icon – Minimum Sizes
These are the minimum icon sizes required for Windows 8.1 App Icons in PNG format.
- 24 x 24 pixels – Badge Logo
- 30 x 30 pixels – Small Logo
- 50 x 50 pixels – Store Logo
- 70 x 70 pixels – Square Logo
- 150 x 150 pixels – Square Logo
- 310 x 150 pixels – Wide Logo
- 310 x 310 pixels – Square Logo
- 620 x 300 pixels – Splash Screen
Windows 8.1 App Icon – All Sizes
In addition to the sizes listed above, the following sizes MAY also be required for optimal rendering and are listed by Microsoft as icon sizes displayed through scaling or in Windows 8 Desktop Application Icons.
Windows 8 Desktop Legacy Icon Sizes:
- 16 x 16 pixels
- 24 x 24 pixels
- 32 x 32 pixels
- 48 x 48 pixels
- 256 x 256 pixels
Square 30 x 30 Logo icons may be scaled to:
- 24 x 24 pixels (80%)
- 30 x 30 pixels (100%)
- 42 x 42 pixels (140%)
- 54 x 54 pixels (180%)
Square 70 x 70 Logo icons may be scaled to:
- 56 x 56 pixels (80%)
- 70 x 70 pixels (100%)
- 98 x 98 pixels (140%)
- 126 x 126 pixels (180%)
Square 150 x 150 Logo icons may be scaled to:
- 120 x 120 pixels (80%)
- 150 x 150 pixels (100%)
- 210 x 210 pixels (140%)
- 270 x 270 pixels (180%)
Square 310 x 310 Logo icons may be scaled to:
- 248 x 248 pixels (80%)
- 310 x 310 pixels (100%)
- 434 x 434 pixels (140%)
- 558 x 558 pixels (180%)
Store 50 x 50 Logo icons may be scaled to:
- 50 x 50 pixels (100%)
- 70 x 70 pixels (140%)
- 90 x 90 pixels (180%)
Wide 310 x 150 Logo icons may be scaled to:
- 248 x 120 pixels (80%)
- 310 x 150 pixels (100%)
- 434 x 210 pixels (140%)
- 558 x 270 pixels (180%)
Badge 24 x 24 Logo icons may be scaled to:
- 24 x 24 pixels (100%)
- 33 x 33 pixels (140%)
- 43 x 43 pixels (180%)
My philosophy is to cover everything, so it may be the case not all of these icon sizes are required. But for optimum quality, it is always best to have a pixel perfect icon size available. For the projects I have worked on so far, the developers have only requested the initial minimal set. If I get clear information about the ‘optional’ sizes I will be sure to add it here.

Microsoft Windows 8.1 Image Assets
This is the sum of the information I have supplied by Microsoft. It is my understanding that Windows 8.1 can optionally scale some icon sizes in certain situations. They recommend certain sizes and also show the maximum they will be scaled. Scaling up seems a pretty bad idea, so I am assuming you can optionally provide the larger sizes too. But this is not something that I am clear about at present and the requirement may indeed depend on decisions made by the developers.
So here is the list of assets provided by Microsoft for Windows 8.1 Tile Images and Icon Sizes.
Tile Images and Logos
- Square 70×70 pixels logo
- Square 150×150 pixels Logo
- Wide 310 x 150 logo
- Square 310 x 310 logo
- Square 30×30 logo
- Store logo
- Badge logo
- Splash Screen
These are the actual images supplied by Microsoft listing how Windows 8.1 Icons may be displayed.
Windows 8.1 Icons – ‘Square’ 70×70 Logo
Windows 8.1 Icons – ‘Square’ 150×150 Logo
Windows 8.1 Icons – ‘Wide’ 310×150 Logo
Windows 8.1 Icons – ‘Square’ 310×310 Logo
Windows 8.1 Icons – ‘Square’ 30×30 Logo
Windows 8.1 Icons – ‘Store’ 50×50 Logo
Windows 8.1 Icons – ‘Badge’ 24×24 Logo
Windows 8.1 Icons – ‘Splash Screen’ 620×300
Given the apparent use of scaling it really surprises me a little that Microsoft have not opted for SVG or another type of vector icon, as it seems perfectly suited to the Metro Icon style. But I suppose that is the topic for another discussion.
I know of Windows Phone 8 and Windows 8.1. What’s Windows Phone 8.1?
Hi Craig,
It is an update to Windows Phone 8 coming out in Q1 2014.
You have reminded me I need to update this post with some more information.
Thanks,
Adam 🙂
Hi Adam,
I’m confused. In WP 8.1, the minimum size of Splash Screen is 620×300, can it fit for screen resolution 480×800? Can you please reveal some details about WP8.1 screen resolutions?
Hi,
You have a mistake in name of the article. What you describing here is Windows 8.1, not Windows *Phone* 8.1
Hi Evgeni,
Looks like you are right, I was given the information by an App developer that needed some icons creating and assumed they were correct!
I’ll change the title, sorry for confusing anyone!
Adam
Hi
Can we include “Windows 8 Desktop Legacy Icon Sizes” icons with modern apps? My issue is that our logo / app icon isn’t displaying nicely when the modern app is minimized on the Taskbar.
Do you know what the icon sizes need to be for the Taskbar, now that modern apps can also display there?
Thanks
Hello Ryan,
Thanks for getting in touch. Can you email me a screenshot of what you mean and I will take a look: adam [at] creativefreedom.co.uk
