Engineering UI Icons for Aerospace Applications
Matt Black Systems is a leading UK-based manufacturer of aerospace cockpit components and user interface systems for aviation, defense, and transportation. Although this project wasn’t directly for their avionics products, it involved designing a custom icon set used in internal engineering and manufacturing tools.
We developed a scalable, intuitive set of 300+ engineering UI icons in 24×24 and 32×32 pixels, to support clarity and user control across multiple interfaces, including legacy desktop platforms and newer responsive layouts. The icons enhanced usability for staff working across complex workflows and technical systems, reinforcing Matt Black’s focus on operational excellence.
Our icon design process was tailored to the aerospace context, balancing consistency, recognisable metaphors, and ease of use. Each icon was tested in multiple sizes and states to ensure usability in safety-critical and high-precision environments.
The project was managed using our in-house Icon Manager system, making collaboration and feedback seamless for the client’s engineering and UI teams.

Icon Manager in Action Supporting Engineering UI Projects
As with many of our larger projects, the entire design and review process for the Matt Black Systems icon set was handled through our in-house Icon Manager platform. Designed specifically for custom icon design projects, the system allowed both their engineering and UI teams to easily preview new icons, submit feedback, and track revisions in one central, visual interface.
