Tesco RFID Reader Scanner UI Icons

RFID Scanner App Icons Built for Real-World Use

Tesco Flagship store in Baldock

Tesco’s Flagship store in Baldock, Hertfordshire

Tesco was preparing to trial a new RFID-based stock control system at their flagship F+F store in Baldock. The system used fixed and portable RFID scanners to improve real-time inventory tracking. Our task: design a clean, intuitive UI custom icon set for the Motorola RFID scanners used by in-store staff.

The icons had to perform equally well under warehouse lighting, in outdoor environments, and on bright retail floors. Our solution was a colourful, high-contrast set of scanner UI icons designed for clarity, speed, and usability.

Tesco initially considered mono-style icons but quickly saw the functional advantage of more colourful and detailed visuals. We worked iteratively with their team to deliver the final set, fine-tuning usability with each round of feedback.

Design Process and Iteration

Our process started with an on-site demo of Tesco’s RFID hardware. We identified the real usage environments and collaborated directly with store staff and software developers. This user-first approach allowed us to focus the UI around clarity and speed of use.

Each of our icon designers explored different icon treatments, flat monochrome, gradient-filled, and multicolour sets. After client review and internal testing, the final icons used bold shapes and selective colour coding to improve recognition under varied lighting conditions.

Because the scanner UI was touchscreen-driven and often operated by gloved hands, we kept shapes large, spacing generous, and contrast high. The result was a tailored icon set that improved interaction speed and helped reduce training time for new staff.
